CiA integrates safety protocol into MCU

Keywords:16bit microcontroller  safe communications  CAN technology

The CAN in Automation (CiA) industry group integrates the CANOpen safety protocol into the firmware of a discontinued Renesas 16bit microcontroller and offers it to customers. With the move, the non-profit organisation intends to addresses the needs for safe communications in markets where the CAN technology gains acceptance.

The SCS02 16bit microcontroller is based on Renesas' M16C-6N4 device which has been discontinued by the chip manufacturer. The protocol stack supports Safety Integrity Level 3 (SIL-3) and is currently in the certification process at T"V Rheinland.

The device aims at system vendors that are including CAN technology in application segments beyond CANOpen's standard factory floor realm such as construction vehicles, cranes, or lifts. These applications require a high degree of resilience and functional safety, a CiA spokesperson explained.

The device will be available in two versions, both equipped with two CAN interfaces each. While the larger package will be function and pin compatible with its predecessor, the smaller one aims at applications where size matters such as sensor integration.
