FireWire ICs reduce power

LSI Corp. has announced three new IEEE 1394 FireWire ICs that offers designers a range of options to support the latest in 1394 performance and the power savings required in portable products. The TrueFIRE family includes options for both the 800Mbps 1394b standard and the earlier 400Mbps 1394a standard. LSI claims that the new ICs reduce power by 17 per cent relative to prior-generation products.

The new announcements include the FW643E 1394b controller, the FW533 1394a controller, and the FW843 1394b PHY (physical layer interface). The FW643E supports performance-intensive peripherals both through the fastest flavour of FireWire and through a PCIe link to the host computer. LSI claims the IC offers 13 per cent faster performance than the competing Texas Instruments' XIO2213.

The FW843 PHY requires a low-cost crystal and a single power supply whereas many such PHYs require multiple supplies. The design is tuned for low-power and applications such as laptop PCs. The FW643E and FW533 are shipping now and the FW843 will ship in Q1 09.
