Keywords:IC  post-silicon validation  debugging tools

Silicon or IC validation is a process aimed at achieving a zero defect silicon. The primary goal of validation is to catch anomalies early in time before the silicon is released to production and shipped to the end product design and manufacturing companies.

Silicon validation is carried out at different stages of IC development. It could be mainly classified into two categories: pre-silicon validation and post-silicon validation. Pre-silicon validation is usually carried out in a sophisticated simulation environment on RTL and gate level logic using various VLSI design and development, and debugging tools. On the other hand, post-silicon validation is carried out on the first fabricated ICs with a true system built around it. This makes use of the hardware evaluation platforms and software test generation and debugging tools. This article by Aseem Vasudev of Analog Devices discusses post-silicon validation and the different tests under this process.
