Samplify Systems Inc. has changed its business model, moving from an intellectual property (IP) provider to a fabless semiconductor company with the announcement of its first silicon products.

Samplify said it has already penetrated a number of data converter market segments with its Prism signal compression technology over the past 18 months. Customers have been pushing Samplify to move compression closer to the analogue domain to provide benefits throughout the entire signal chain, the company said.

Samplify announced the immediate availability of a family of 16-channel,12-bit, 65 Msample/sec analogue-to-digital converter (ADC) ICs with integrated data compression technology. The SAM1600 family boasts power consumption of just 44 mW per channel, Samplify said.

The performance of the SAM1600 family is enhanced by the integration of Samplify's patented Prism data compression technology which reduces the number of LVDS I/O pairs, and thereby the power they consume, by up to 75 per cent for high channel density applications such as ultrasound front-ends, 4G wireless base stations, automated test equipment, and RADAR/SONAR receivers, the company said.

"Creating 'intelligent data converters' by integrating the compression engine with data converters is the logical and most exciting approach for our industry," said Al Wegener, Samplify founder, chairman and chief technology officer, in a statement. "As important, this new business model allows us to bring a new design methodology for applications requiring compression/conversion at the front end, while allowing us to create more opportunities for decompression in FPGAs and software on the back end."

Market research firm Gartner Inc. predicts the data converter market will grow at a cumulative annual growth rate of 5.3 per cent to over Rs.16,774.14 crore ($3.9 billion) by 2011.
