PMC-Sierra Inc. will unveil its solution for unifying five different frequency bands at this week's WiMax World (Sept. 30 to Oct. 2).

The company said it will show solutions for unifying frequency bands being allocated for wireless broadband worldwide. With frequency bands ranging from 700 MHz to 6 GHz, RF chip makers are crafting solutions that enable both basestations and mobile subscriber devices to switch wavelengths in different regions.

"We are finding that WiMax is clearly establishing itself in countries with developing economies such as India, Latin America and the Middle East," said Neeraj Sahejpal, product marketing manager for RF chips at PMC-Sierra. "For global WiMax coverage, a multi-band solution will also be required."

Global frequency allocations for WiMax cover five bands: 700 MHz, 2.3-2.7 GHz, 2.7-2.9 GHz, 3.3-3.8 GHz and 5-6 GHz. To cover that spectrum, PMC-Sierra will announce four new RF chips. For WiMax basestations and mobile subscriber devices, OEMs can use the various chips as the RF component to serve the five frequency bands. Multiband RF chips can autoconfigure for the specific frequency allocations made in different regions, just as GSM phones currently automatically switch bands.

"OEMs will want to build multi-band devices to accelerate the availability of WiMax in diverse regional markets" said Sahejpal.

PMC-Sierra's RF family will integrate multiple direct-conversion RF transceivers, transmitter baluns, analogue and digital converters and a Jedec-compliant base band digital interface. OEMs can then add a power amplifier and a base band media access controller to an RF chip to create WiMax devices, which support both 802.16e-2005 and 802.16-2004 IEEE WiMax standards. Channel bandwidths can be configured to range from 3.5-20 MHz.
