PCI backplanes power management requisites

Keywords:Serial buses  PCI-Express  power routing  power integrity

Serial buses are beginning to appear in modern systems, along side traditional parallel buses. For the foreseeable future, these two types of buses will coexist. Serial buses aren't limited by data path skew so allow more flexibility in routing and connector design. Serial buses also require less connector pins, so they can be more compact. However, power routing and power integrity is still critical with serial buses.

While silicon technology packs more functions into less expensive ICs, connectors and other mechanical components get more expensive. Today, the industry is at the turning point between serial and parallel buses. PCI-Express is now comparable to the cost of PCI-X and will soon be less expensive. However, for today, the advantages of low cost, backwards compatibility, and ease of implementation mean that PCI, PCI-X 1.0 and PCI-X 2.0 will be with us for quite a while.
