ECB disc storage revenue totals $4.5B

Worldwide external controller-based (ECB) disc storage revenue totalled Rs.19,286.31 crore (US$4.5 billion) in the second quarter of 2008, an 18.8 per cent increase over the same period in 2007, according to Gartner Inc.

EMC maintained the no. 1 spot overall, finishing the quarter at 24.3 per cent market share. IBM was in second place with 14.1 per cent of the market followed by Hewlett-Packard with 11.8 per cent.

Data from the research firm shows that Sun Microsystems enjoyed the highest growth year-over-year at 34.7 per cent due mainly to a large increase in revenues from the company's Sun StorageTek 2000, 6000 and 9000 series. NetApp had the next highest growth with 22.9 per cent. Also recording double-digit growth were Dell with 18.3 per cent, Hitachi Data Systems at 18.1 per cent, EMC at 16 per cent, and IBM at 14.9 per cent.

On a regional basis, Japan showed the highest growth at 38.7 per cent year-over-year followed by Latin America, EMEA, and Asia Pacific at 25.2 per cent, 22.3 per cent and 16.6 per cent respectively. Growth in North America for the same period was 12.7 per cent.
