The ZigBee wireless networking standard is fostering a wide range of newly un-tethered products for applications such as home and building automation, utility metering and building security. Devices without the cost or power budgets to support wireless connectivity now can leverage proven ZigBee technology for new innovation possibilities. However, "going wireless" brings new test challenges for designers unfamiliar with radio technology.

ZigBee implementations involve mixed analogue/digital hardware and software running on a low-cost microcontroller. Most new designs use single-chip SoCs and few external components are usually required. The article explains the challenges that the ZigBee technology poses in terms of tests and measurements.
