Industrial motors power IC market shows growth

An annual growth rate of about 9.1 per cent will be seen in the power semiconductors market in industrial motor drives until 2010, according to IMS Research. Driven by increasing fraction of motor electronic drives, the power IC market will grow from Rs.4,285.85 ($1 billion) in 2007 to Rs.5,571.60 ($1.3 billion) in 2010.

Power semiconductor components are the biggest revenue opportunity used in industrial motor drives and the market size is about twice the size of the combined market for microcontroller and analogue-based components. "IGBT modules are used in the large majority of industrial motor drives," explained Jamie Fox, an IMS Research analyst. "Standard IGBT modules, intelligent power modules and power integrated modules are also used," he adds.

Power integrated modules have the highest growth forecast-10.8 per cent annually.
