Oscilloscopes enable faster throughput

LeCroy Corp. has introduced the WavePro 7 Zi series of digital oscilloscopes that is touted to deliver performance, speed, and a user interface optimised for analysis to enhance the design, debug and validation process in the 1.5GHz to 6GHz bandwidth range.

Incorporating an industry-first 15.3-inch, 16:9 high-definition touchscreen display, the oscilloscopes solve electronic design problems for serial data, embedded, automotive and general-purpose applications within minutes instead of hours, LeCroy said.

The WavePro 7 Zi is designed with X-Stream II streaming technology, which enables high throughput of data even when the oscilloscope is analysing eight 128Mpt waveforms, LeCroy said. This architecture uses variable waveform segment lengths to improve CPU cache memory efficiency, resulting in 10 to 20 times faster processing compared to other oscilloscopes. The proprietary architecture design is augmented with an Intel Core2 Quad processor, high-speed serial data buses, a 64bit OS and up to 8GB of RAM.

LeCroy claims the WavePro 7 Zi series is the only oscilloscope with both 1MΩ inputs for general-purpose use and 50Ω inputs for 1.5GHz to 6GHz signals. The scope delivers a high sample rate of 20GS/s on all four channels and 40GS/s interleaved; a long record length (10Mpts/ch standard and up to 128Mpts/ch and 256Mpts interleaved optional); and a variety of probes, options, and accessories.

In addition, TriggerScan and WaveScan, special modes for finding rare events and correlating what caused the problem, shorten the time to debug a new design. The WavePro 7 Zi's tool-box can be extended to an integrated second display in order to expand the oscilloscope's workspace. The oscilloscopes have a removable front panel that allows engineers to place the controls next to the circuit under test, and a new serial interface bus, LSIB, that enables data transfer to a computer at rates up to 500Mpts/s, which is 25 to 100 times faster than any other method, LeCroy said. The WavePro 7 Zi Series offers more measure, math, graphing, statistical, frequency analysis, mask testing, and other tools as standard features, as well as more ways to leverage the tools to get answers faster. A new option, WPZi-SPECTRUM, provides spectral analysis capability to measure power density, real, imaginary, and magnitude FFT types that emulate the operation of a spectrum analyser. A table shows the peak spectra and levels for easy review.

Parameter Math provides fast and accurate calculations: 750,000 measurements per second. Parameters can be added, subtracted, multiplied or divided by any two standard or custom parameters. Eight Math/Zoom functions provide chained math on math operations. LeCroy completely integrates third-party programs into the oscilloscope's processing stream by allowing users to create and deploy a new measurement or math algorithm directly into the oscilloscope environment and display the result on the oscilloscope in real time.
