Capacitors offer high CV rating

Vishay Intertechnology Inc. has extended its 298D series of MicroTan solid tantalum chip capacitors to offer 10µF-4V capacitance-voltage (CV) rating in the moulded 0402 package size.
Leveraging the patented multi-array packaging assembly technology, Vishay's 298D MicroTan capacitors have been extended to offer CV ranges from 4.7µF-4V to 10µF-4V in the ultra-compact 1.0mm x 0.5mm 0402 K-case with a low 0.60mm maximum profile. Together with the previously released 0603 M-case and 0805 P-case, the series offers a CV range of 0.68µF-35V to 220µF-4V.
Vishay considers the introduction of these capacitance-voltage ratings a breakthrough in volumetric efficiency. Until now designers have typically needed to use two 4.7µF-4V capacitors for filtering and minimising harmonic distortion in MP3 players. Vishay says that a 10µF-4V device in a single 0402 package allows designers to reduce capacitor parts count while maintaining superior audio performance not possible with MLCCs due to their piezoelectric noise.
In addition to MP3 players, the 298D tantalum capacitors can be used for audio filtering and signal processing in mobile phones, digital cameras and other portable devices.
The devices' rectangular moulded case encapsulation is ideal for high-volume PCB assembly and the special L-shaped facedown terminations offer better contact to the solder pad than traditional facedown style terminations.
Samples of the capacitors are available now. Production quantities will be available in September 2008, with a lead-time of eight to 10 weeks for larger orders.
