VoIP security: Scenarios, challenges, and countermeasures (2)

Keywords:VoIP  QoS  firewall  security

Quality of service (QoS) is fundamental to the operation of a VoIP network; however implementing security can cause a marked deterioration in QoS. These complications range from delaying or blocking of call setups by firewalls to encryption-produced latency and delay variation (jitter).

Before deploying security on firewalls, security practitioners need to understand the performance of the firewall system in terms of how fast it can handle VoIP packets. Most VoIP traffic is UDP-based. Since numerous RTP ports may be open at any time, it is recommended that all PC-based phones be placed behind a stateful firewall to monitor VoIP media traffic.
