Unscrambling the power losses in switching boost converters

The objective of this article is to unscramble and bring insight into the power-consuming mechanisms of a boost converter, establishing the means by which a designer can more effectively balance design choices.

The efficiency of boost converters is generally lower than their bucking counterparts. Drain capacitance on switching node VPH slows down the transition and consequently increases normally negligible power losses except when intentional drain capacitance is introduced.

Although exact relationships for all the power losses are often desired, the above analysis may prove more useful in a design environment, where critical design choices are made a priority and later verified and tweaked with simulators like Cadence.
