Using self-protected MOSFETs in ruggedised electronic systems

Power devices used in automotive electronic systems must endure extremely harsh environmental conditions. Designers commonly use self-protected MOSFET power devices in these ruggedised electronic systems. This article studies the issues regarding the use of these devices, such as short circuits, electro-static discharge, and over-temperature fault conditions.

Utilising self-protected MOSFETs can yield a cost-effective fault tolerant system design. However, operating conditions that can damage or destroy self-protected MOSFET devices do exist. Careful consideration of these factors during system design will result in a cost effective, reliable system.
