Underutilized SEPIC outperforms the flyback topology

Keywords:SEPIC  flyback  power supply  non-isolated supply

This article provides a comparison of a SEPIC and flyback power supply with identical requirements. Component stresses for each approach and example stresses are presented for each topology.

When designers are given a set of non-isolated supply specifications where the output voltage falls between the minimum and maximum input voltage, they usually choose the flyback topology over the SEPIC or single-ended primary inductance converter topology.

This is mostly because of lack of familiarity with the SEPIC. However, this may not be the best design solution.
