The European Commission will invest Rs.2,523.65 crore (400M euros) in European robotics research between 2007 and 2010, representing twice as much of the previous four-year investment., according to its recent announcement.

The EC envisions technology transfer schemes forming between academia and industry that allow research labs to use industrial-strength robots for large-scale experimentation. The resulting scientific knowledge would then directly be fed back to participating companies.

The EC also wants industry to intensify efforts to manufacture critical components, such as gears, in Europe in order to face competition from Asia.

About one-third of the world's industrial robots are produced in Europe.

The world market for industrial robots currently is Rs.25,236.50 crore (4B euros) and forecast to increase by 4.2 per cent per year to 2010, according to statistics from the International Federation of Robotics (IFR).
