Sequans Communications SA, a French WiMAX chip supplier, introduced a mobile single chip solution that claims to integrate advanced base band functionality plus radiofrequency and SDRAM.

The SQN1170 is the sixth mobile WiMAX chip it has delivered, measuring 12X12 mm. It has throughput of more than 30Mbps and draws less than 600 mW in peak MIMO mode, said Sequans.

Among other applications, Sequans cited mobile handsets, smartphones, and PDAs. The SQN1170 also targets embedded PC applications enabling WiMAX into MID and UMPC devices, as well as small form-factor PC accessories like USB dongles.

This product release comes after Sequans " raised Rs.112.06 crore ($28 million) in a fourth round of equity-based and convertible debt financing. At that time, Sequans indeed stated that the funds would be used to launch its next generation of chips.

Mitsumi, a manufacturer of multi-chip and system-in-package modules, has been using Sequans' chips to manufacture Mobile WiMAX modules. The first devices Mitsumi delivered to customers were an SD card based on Sequans' SQN1130 Mobile WiMAX base band chip and an SDIO module based on Sequans' SQN1130 base band and SQN1140 RF chips.

Mitsumi claimed it will be the first to use Sequans' SQN1170 chip to develop an SDIO module comprising full Mobile WiMAX system functionality. The SDIO module, the company claimed, offers manufacturers a flexible solution to build high performance, low power-consuming Mobile WiMAX end user devices.
