16Bit Quad DAC attains ±1LSB INL and DNL

Linear Technology Corp. introduces the LTC2755-16, a quad 16bit current output DAC with six software-programmable output ranges. It guarantees 16bit linearity (±1LSB (max) INL and DNL) over the industrial temperature range without any adjustment. Furthermore, each DAC output can be individually programmed through a parallel interface or can be pin-strapped for operation within a single range.

A current output DAC allows end-users to customise their output amplifiers for optimal performance, depending on the requirements for better DC or AC specifications, lower noise, or higher speed. By integrating four DACs with good linearity, the LTC2755-16 is useful for multi-channel DAQ systems and ATE.

Programmable output

The LTC2755-16 is capable of outputting six unique SoftSpan software-programmable unipolar and bipolar output ranges up to ±10V. Software programmability eliminates the need for expensive precision resistors, gain stages and switching jumpers by hand. The six SoftSpan output voltage ranges include two unipolar ranges (0V to 5V, 0V to 10V) and four bipolar ranges (±10V, ±5V, ±2.5V, -2.5V to +7.5V). The LTC2755-16 outputs any of the six SoftSpan ranges while operating from a single 2.7V to 5.5V supply, drawing a maximum supply current of only 1µA.

The LTC2755-16 also offers AC specifications, including full-scale settling time of only 2µs and low 1nV-s glitch impulse. The LTC2755-16's 2MHz multiplying bandwidth and AC specifications are helpful for applications such as waveform generation. Fast settling and low glitch reduce the harmonic distortion, making it possible to produce higher frequency, and lower noise output waveforms. The LTC2755-16 uses a bidirectional input/output parallel interface that allows readback of any internal register, as well as the DAC output span setting.

Pin-compatible 14bit and 12bit devices are the LTC2755-14 and LTC2755-12 respectively. The LTC2755 DACs are all available in 9mm x 9mm QFN-48 packages, offering a pin-compatible and code-compatible family for performance/cost optimisation in the end-product. The quad LTC2755 joins the dual LTC2753 and single LTC2751, forming a complete family of precision current output DACs. The entire family is available today in commercial and industrial temperature ranges. Pricing begins at Rs.288.32 ($7.15) each for the LTC2755-12, Rs.510.10 ($12.65) each for the LTC2755-14, and Rs.719.78 ($17.85) each for the LTC2755-16 in 1,000-piece quantities.
