RIM puts up BlackBerry R&D in Germany

Research in Motion (RIM) is set to establish its first Blackberry research facility outside of Canada. The R&D centre will be located in Bochum, in the North Rhine-Westphalia region of Germany, according to a report by Agence France Presse.

The centre will open on the campus of Ruhr-Universitat Bochum with 140 new employees and with plans to expand to as many as 500 people, the company said in a statement. The facility will focus on hardware and software development for its BlackBerry smart phones, with some Rs.181.46 crore ($45 million) to be invested in its first year of operation.

On the other had, Finnish handset maker Nokia announced in January it will close its production facility in Bochum on June 30, cutting 2,300 jobs to reduce costs.
