Advances in power supply design technology have allowed the development of new low-cost versions of traditional power supply designs. While low-cost designs are very attractive, it must be noted that the cost reductions are typically achieved at the expense of EMC. Therefore, the successful implementation of a low-cost design will require greater planning and expertise to meet the required immunity performance levels. This article is part of a tutorial series on how to improve transient immunity in microcontroller-based embedded design. It focuses on PCB power supply and floorplanning. It discusses the two categories of power supply designs: linear and switching.
