Designing RF remote controls for DTV products

Keywords:RF remote controls  DTV  IR

The infrared (IR) remote controls for television has been the de-facto standard since the 1980s. These work fine, as long as the remote is within the field-of-vision limitations, you have a clear line-of-sight (LOS) and you're satisfied with unidirectional communications. However, radio frequency (RF) home entertainment communications offer a number of advantages over IR communications. The RF remote control console is not limited by a finite field of vision and there are no LOS requirements. But what's moving the RF solution well beyond the capabilities of IR is the ability to perform bi-directional communications.
