Graphics libraries for embedded systems The flexibility offered by graphical user interfaces (GUIs) and the falling cost of flat panel liquid crystal display (LCD) screens is leading embedded systems programmers into the field of interactive graphics programming. The proliferation of set-top boxes is another reason that many embedded developers are finding themselves facing the challenge of graphics programming. Developing an interactive graphical interface can become an overwhelming task if you don't seek out some third party tools and libraries. Buttons, menus, windows, and text rendering are common to many applications, making this an ideal area for code reuse and for leveraging third party libraries. I'll first discuss the features you should look for when you are window shopping (pardon the pun). The second half of the article presents a review of a number of the tools currently on the market.
