Design patterns for high availability Our society has come to expect uninterrupted service from many of the systems that it employs, such as phones, automated teller machines, and credit card verification networks. Many of these are implemented as embedded systems. Embedded designers are being asked more often to create systems that run reliably to the degree that they're in service 99.999% of the time (termed "five-nines" availability), which is equivalent to less than one second of downtime per day. These are called high availability systems. View the PDF document for more information.
