OVP controllers protect Hi-Speed USB signals from ESD

Overvoltage protection (OVP) controllers that provide ESD protection for Hi-Speed USB D+/D- signals have been introduced by Maxim Integrated Products. The MAX4987AE/MAX4987BE devices integrate low-capacitance diodes to provide robust, ±15kV ESD protection (Human Body Model) for Hi-Speed USB and USB D+/D- signals. They are ideal for space-constrained applications—such as cellphones, smartphones, PDAs, MP3 players and portable video players—that are attached to USB ports for connectivity or charging.

To reduce external component count and save space, the controllers integrate a low-Ron nFET that protects low-voltage systems from overvoltage up to 28V. They provide an overvoltage trip level of 6.15V, and undervoltage trip levels of 2.55V (MAX4987AE) and 4.2V (MAX4987BE), with a start-up delay of 30ms. A flag signal notifies the MCU when an overvoltage or undervoltage fault condition occurs. They also feature internal overcurrent protection of 1.5A (min) to protect the circuitry against short-circuit conditions. The devices can be controlled by an enable input.
