Japan companies Matsushita Electric Industrial Co. Ltd, Canon Inc. and Hitachi Ltd are reportedly in the final stage of negotiations on forming an alliance to produce OLED panels for TV and other electronics.

AFP, quoting a Nikkei economic daily, reported that the three firms are planning an investment of Rs.10,259.59 crore ($2.6 billion) to build a production plant for small and medium-size LCD panels.

According to the AFP report, Matsushita Electric Industrial and Canon will invest over Rs.34.84 crore ($8.83 million) each to acquire equal minority stakes in Hitachi Displays. As reported, Canon is considering the use of OLED panels in digital cameras and camcorders, while Matsushita is likely to use them in flat-panel TVs.

All three companies declined to comment on the report. Hitachi issued a formal statement on its Website that no decision as reported has been made.
