STMicroelectronics has opened a new facility in Vietnam that would focus on R&D, according to a report from the Viet Nam News.

Francois Guilbert, ST's CEO for the Asia-Pacific region said Vietnam is a potential market to develop the business as the economy is dynamic, labour is available and the demand for digital electronics products is wide. ST also pledged to make digital products Vietnamese language-capable in the near future.

Guilbert added that while the company will initially focus on R&D, it plans to produce digital solutions for personal use and industry production. He added that since the multimedia market in the country is booming, ST will zero in satellite TV equipment. Most satellite TV control boxes in Vietnam were imported from China at high prices, he noted.

ST's new facility will also provide training courses to Vietnamese engineers to gear them up with global technology and apply it to local systems.
