Car networking nodes market to grow by 14% annually

Marker research firm Strategy Analytics forecasts that the automotive networking nodes market will grow 14 per cent annually to reach almost Rs.3,954.98 crore ($1 billion). The firm, however, warned that not all protocols will have a chance to get under the hood of future cars.

Driven by the trend to comfort, entertainment and safety, the deployment of networks in cars will continue. While the global market for automotive network nodes represented a value of Rs.1,360.51 crore ($344 million) in 2006, it will expand to Rs.3,856.11 crore ($975 million) in 2014, the firm predicted. The market expansion will take place in the conflicting fields of user demand, price pressure and the industry's endeavour to keep complexity at bay.

The CAN bus, while quite an old technology, will be able to defend and even increase its market share, Strategy Analytics said. Proprietary protocols, however, will disappear by 2009 at latest, the study predicts. The SAE J1850 interface definition, too, is forecast to get wiped out.

Strategy Analytics sees LIN/J2602 and SBW (Safe-by-wire), a group of protocols used to connect airbag sensors and actuators on the winning side while BMW's venerable Byteflight protocol, probably the most prominent member of this group, is already about to be phased out. FlexRay will continue its upward trend, beginning about 2010 and theMOST bus used to connect multimedia devices is also expected to gain significantly market share.
