RF IC vendor SST Communications, a subsidiary of Silicon Storage Technology Inc. is offering a power amplifier for Wi-Fi applications dubbed the 12LP14E, which supports the high-capacity 802.11g wireless standard and consumes 90mA of power at 18dBm.

The 12LP14E power amplifier's low-power consumption and 2-by-2mm QFN packaging with a height of 0.45mm make it well-suited for space-and power-constrained portable applications including smart phones, PDAs and handheld gaming platforms.

It also provides a low idle current of 45mA and linearity of less than 3 per cent added EVM (error vector magnitude) at 18dBm output power, which is essential for 54Mbits/s 802.11g operation while meeting the standard's spectrum mask at 22dBm min.

Operating over the 2.4-2.5GHz band, the 12LP14E power amplifier requires few external components and delivers 32 per cent power added efficiency (PAE) at 22dBm output power for 802.11g, and 30 per cent PAE at 21.5dBm output for 802.11b. Also included in the 12LP14E is an integrated temperature stable power detector to provide a reliable solution for power control.

Pricing starts at Rs.14.24 (36 cents) in 10,000-unit quantities. The devices are currently sampling with volume production scheduled in Q4.
