Sony Corp. head Howard Stringer admits that the high-definition DVD battle is a "difficult fight" with the company-backed Blu-ray in a stalemate with its rival HD DVD, heralded by Toshiba Corp. and Microsoft Corp.

"We were trying to win on the merits, which we were doing for a while, until Paramount changed sides," the Associated Press quoted Stringer, who was speaking last week the 92nd Street Y cultural centre in Manhattan, New York in the United States.

In August, Hollywood studio bigwigs Paramount Pictures and Dreamworks Animation SKG Inc. opted to offer its next-generation DVDs in HD DVD format, a significant blow to the Blu-ray camp.

Stringer nevertheless, downplayed the importance of the battle.

"It doesn't mean as much as all that," he said, emphasising that it is mostly a matter of prestige whose format wins out in the end.
