They came, designed innovations and conquered.

Eight companies out of 211 participants emerged victorious in this year's Global Sources' Electronics Design Awards for the most outstanding product produced in Asia held at Hong Kong's AsiaWorld-Expo from Oct. 12-15. The winning devices topped over hundreds of design entries from mainland China, Hong Kong, Korea and Taiwan in terms of technical design, features and functionality, visual appeal, and sales, marketing and export success.

Making it to the final cut after the top 40 finalists announced in September, Starline International Group's SLYD USB flash drive and Shenzhen Mele Digital Technology's HMC-35HD HDD portable media player were hailed as the winners for the computer products and home entertainment categories, respectively. The car DVD player of Coagent Electronic S&T bested all other entries for in-car electronics, while the photo fuse of Photo-Top Technologies clinched the award for the opto-electronics category.

Adding new blood to the region's design turf are Shenzhen EZJoy Electronics and Shenzhen LVSUN Electronics Technology. The companies' wireless game controller and LS-PAB120AA laptop AC adapter won them awards for the personal electronics and power supplies, respectively.

The best security product device was the VIDMIC shoulder microphone with built-in digital camera/video recorder from Venture Global and the best wireless communications and networking product was dmedia System's F200 GPS phone.

"The Awards highlight the most exciting products coming out of Asia and Greater China today," said Mark Saunderson, president of Global Sources' electronics business unit. "The quality and sophistication of the winning products clearly sets them apart from the rest. Our panel of judges acknowledged their unique application of emerging technologies and creative marketing that have been instrumental in their export success."

Sarah Benecke, Global Sources' executive director concurred. "The winning products in our Electronics Design Awards are absolutely stunning. They're representative of the quality and design innovation coming out of the region today," she noted.

Judges included Leo Lin, VP of corporate strategy and Asia-Pacific business development of Monster Cable and Kevin Beveridge, director of Asia Commodity Management, Celestica, as well as editors from Global Sources' electronics publications.
