One Laptop Per Child (OLPC) leaders admitted Sept. 14 that the then proposed $100-laptops are now slated to cost Rs.7,604.28 ($188) when mass production begins, according to an Associated Press report.

First introduced in 2006, the OLPC announced in April that the price climbed up to Rs.7,118.90 ($176), saying the Rs.4.044.83 ($100)-price as a long-term goal.

Spokesman George Snell cited a variety of factors, including currency fluctuations and rising costs of such components as nickel and silicon as causes of the increase. However, he assured that the project was committed to keeping the price from rising above Rs.7,685.18 ($190).

While the less than Rs.8,089.66 ($200) price for a laptop is a relative bargain, being nearly twice the price of what the project's memorable nickname promised could make it harder for OLPC to sign up international governments as customers.

OLPC disclosed that it has commitments for at least 30 lakh of its rugged "XO" computers, but did not , however, disclose which countries are first in line. Among the nations that have shown interest are Brazil, Libya, Thailand and Uruguay.
