Automotive DC/DC IC toggles between buck, boost

Texas Instruments Inc. has introduced an automotive-qualified DC/DC power-management IC that autonomously switches between buck and boost modes to provide a constant regulated output of 5V.

The TPIC74100-Q1 operates over an input voltage range of 1.5-40V and simplifies design by eliminating the need for external components. The device also minimises EMI in the system by implementing a clock modulator and adjustable slew rate.

The switch-mode regulator of the device has 5V ±2 per cent during normal mode and 5V ±3 per cent during low-power or crossover mode. The device's switching frequency of 440kHz (typical) is outside of the AM frequency band.

The device has an input operating range of 1.5-40V (Vdriver), which features the following: 1A load-current capability, 200mA load-current capability down to 2V input (Vdriver) and 120mA load-current capability down to 1.5V input (Vdriver). It also has disable and low-power operation modes to optimise power savings.

TPIC74100-Q1 has a reset function with deglitch timer and programmable delay that enables increased reliability in the system. The device also offers programmable alarm function for under-voltage detection and indication. It also comes available in a thermally-enhanced package for efficient heat management.

TPIC74100-Q1 voltage regulators are available today in volume in a 20-pin HTSSOP PowerPAD package. Pricing starts at Rs.74.80 ($1.70) in quantities of 1,000 units.
