Oki Electric Industry Co. Ltd claimed to be the first in the industry to develop a session border controller for next-generation networks. This controller interconnects networks between IP multi-media subsystems (IMS). It can connect with different carries' IMS networks and terminals by absorbing the SIP (differences and by conducting media conversion.

Triple-play support
"Telecom carriers will start providing triple-play service for voice, video and data to tens of millions of telephone subscribers over next-generation networks," said Kichiro Akino, president of network systems at Oki Electric Industry. "In such an environment, carriers need to connect with other carriers to transfer services and provide a ubiquitous environment, enabling users to access services whenever and wherever they desire."

Akino said Oki's CenterStage NX3200 enables carriers to interconnect their networks, which was never done in the past because it was difficult to process large capacity traffic in high speed with different IPs such as IPv4 to IPv6. Development of such system was delayed because there were no frameworks to flexibly interconnect higher-level services, explained Akino.

Middleware platform
Oki succeeded in overcoming the challenge of processing at high speed while ensuring high expandability by using the CenterStage HAPF as its middleware platform. This platform ensures high reliability for Oki's CenterStage NX Series. With a duplex server and a function to ensure reliability, the middleware achieves an operating rate of 99.99 per cent, a high level of availability equivalent to a central office. In addition, the company was able to flexibly interconnect higher-level services using AdvancedTCA communications servers from Motorola and network processing technologies.

Oki's CenterStage NX3200 is already available in Japan. Pricing depends on network structure and number of subscribers. Oki plans to sell 250 units in the next three years.
