China's two leading telecom equipment providers, Huawei Technologies and ZTE Corp., are planning to build new manufacturing and R&D bases to speed up their expansion in both domestic and global markets.

Huawei will spend Rs.2,281 crore ($517 million) on a new R&D and manufacturing base in the southern city of Dongguan, in Guangdong Province, China. The company will build the base in phases and expects the first phase to come online early next year. When it is fully operational, the cluster of factories will account for several billion dollars worth of Huawei's revenue, according to local media.

Huawei is also building a similar base in the northern city of Langfang, Hebei Province, China. That one should be finished in July and it, too, is expected to generate billions in revenue.

ZTE is also building up a national R&D and manufacturing park in Shenzhen, Guangdong Province to expand its presence in the global cell phone market. The park will cover 440,000m² and employ 15,000 people.

Huawei is China's largest telecom gear provider and is aggressively expanding in developing markets. ZTE is right behind it. The company recently won an order from Sprint Nextel to provide WiMAX 802.16e equipment for a U.S. wireless broadband network.
