GH04P21A2G blue-violet laser diode from Sharp

Sharp Corp. announced it will begin volume production of the high-power blue-violet laser diode GH04P21A2G in May. This device achieves 210mW power output and will enable high-speed 6X recording on next-generation dual-layer Blu-ray Discs (BD) and HD DVDs. The blue laser diodes are suitable for recorders and PCs capable of recording on next-generation DVDs. The GH04P21A2G makes use of crystal growth technology developed for infrared, red and blue-violet low-power laser diodes. In addition to a newly developed laser chip with a facet structure, and a high power output that will contribute to high-speed recording for next-generation DVDs, this device also features a service life of 10,000hrs.

Priced at Rs.18,795.12 ($426.82) each, device samples will be available in 5.6mm-diameter CAN package starting April 2007. Volume production is scheduled in May 2007.
