Rohm Co. Ltd has developed what it says is the industry's first 6ch power-management LSI with an integrated protective function and start-up sequence for portable DVD players. The BD8611EFV promises high reliability for set systems used in battery-driven equipment including portable DVD players.

Main features of BD8611EFV include:

↲ Integrated protective function for all output power supplies.
↲ Integrated switching path function for power supply.
↲ Detection of irregular outputs (rise or drop in supply voltage output, faulty start-up sequence, over current, or parts detached)
↲ Built-in start-up sequence circuit
↲ Incorporated 6ch variable power supplies adjusted by external resistors suitable for portable equipment.
↲ Two-cell Li-ion battery charging function.

Protective circuits
Portable equipment such as DVD players or NAVI require multiple power supply voltages for main chipsets, amplifiers, LCD panels or drivers, which are built from independent power-supply ICs or in combination with semi-integrated power supply ICs with discrete protective circuits. Protective circuits for those power supplies are individually provided. However, if any of the power supplies malfunction, other circuits can be affected depending on system configurations.

The BD8611EFV power-management LSI incorporates a 6ch power-supply system and integrated protective circuit in a single chip, providing system protection from various power supply failures while enhancing the reliability of system sets. The device detects irregular rise or drop in output voltages, failure in the start-up sequence, shorted output or disconnected parts, resulting in a system shutdown even if the power supply process malfunctions. It also incorporates a power supply start-up sequence.

Start-up sequence
Integrating a start-up sequence is essential for multi-block circuits and processor cores such as DSP and I/O, which require different voltages (1.8V for I/O, 3.3V for DSP core) and sensitive power-up timing sequences. The BD9611EFV LSI also allows a reduction in the power system development phase, enhancing system reliability.

Rohm offers a line of intelligent power-management LSIs including the BD8611EFV with multi-power supply channel configuration voltages, output current and packages applicable to portable equipment and circuits.

Sample delivery of BD8611EFV will start this month at a sample price of Rs.376.34 ($8.53). Mass production will start in June 2007 at the rate of 800,000 pieces per month.
