SDK breaks quantum efficiency record for organic EL

Showa Denko K.K. (SDK) has developed a single-layer organic electroluminescent (EL) device technology based on phosphorescent polymer materials, achieving what it touts as the industry's highest external quantum efficiency—17 per cent for green light and 16 per cent for blue light—and closing the gap to realise the theoretical maximum quantum efficiency for the devices, which tips at 20 per cent. The technology also features a durability of 3,50,000hrs. With this technology, SDK said, they will develop large surface-emission panels and will build a trial-volume production line by middle of the year.

To achieve these features, SDK has developed a copolymer in which phosphorescent substance and other materials are mixed. The company also used a cleaning/interface control technology. In a 100nm-thick organic EL that is sandwiched between electrodes, SDK explained, the cleanliness of electrode surface and work function can largely influence device performance.

The phosphorescent organic EL devices can theoretically produce four times higher emissive efficiency and cut electric consumption to a quarter compared to its fluorescent counterparts which are widely used today for cell phone displays.

SDK aims to use the technology to develop high-performance and stable organic EL panels for advertisement and display applications, utilising the technology's high emissive efficiency, long durability and large area-emission functions. The company will market the new product by the end of 2008.
