Memory device maker Qimonda AG and technology company Ovonyx Inc. have signed an agreement to mutually license their patents and intellectual property for non-volatile memory devices in phase change RAM (PC-RAM) technology.

Ovonyx was launched in 1999 in order to commercialise PC-RAM technology invented by another company named Energy Conversion Devices Inc. (ECD). Ovonyx is part of ECD. Intel, Samsung and STMicroelectronics are also developing phase-change products with Ovonyx.

Recently, Qimonda, the former memory division of Infineon, is also reaching a phase-change memory technology with IBM and Macronix of Hsinchu, Taiwan. Now, Qimonda plans to tap Ovonyx' expertise to push the technology that some say could eventually replace today's nonvolatile memory technology in a host of popular applications.

"Ovonyx' PC-RAM technology has the potential to revolutionise the Flash business as well as today's RAM business", said Qimonda CEO Kin Wah Loh in a statement. "Ovonyx' help will enable us to promote our activities in this future technology."
