The next-generation TW8810 processor from Techwell Inc. is designed for Sharp's dual-view LCDs. Part of Techwell's TW88xx family, the TW8810 chip touts to have the most integrated and feature-rich functions yet seen for in-car navigation systems, dashboard DVD players, rear-seat/head-mount displays and car backup cameras.

The TW8810, with 256-colour, 24-bit, wide-angle capability and blinking, transparency, blending, and multi-window functionality for Sharp's dual view panels and the company's Mobile DVR reference design, supports Picture-in-Picture (PIP), picture-over-picture (POP), and multiple PIP formats (external 64Mbit SDRAM required).

In addition to direct support of Sharp's products, the chip accepts multiple input formats, including composite, S-Video, YPbPr, analogue RGB, 24-bit digital RGB, and 8/16/24 bit YCbCr. The TW8810 integrates a 3D comb filter for composite NTSC and PAL video streams. 3D noise reduction circuitry reduces analogue-video artifacts. Proprietary image processing algorithms include a built-in 2D de-interlacing engine with low-angle compensation and black/white stretch and colour enhancement to improve picture quality. The TW8810 also supports external 18-bit on-screen displays with external alpha blending control.

The Mobile DVR reference design will be available for evaluation in Q1. The TW8810, in a 208-pin PQFP, will be sampling in Q1 2007 and is expected to go into mass production by Q2.
