Optical and electronic technology provider New Medium Enterprises Inc. (NME) has secured worldwide patents for its high-capacity versatile multi-layer disc (VMD) technology.

VMD technology provides up to eight information layers on each side of a disc and can be used for both blue laser and red laser formats, thus offering greater content options. The technology is suitable for single- and double-sided discs, and for multiple formats, including Blu-ray and HD DVD.

The NME patents cover the principle of NME's modified 2P process, which involves producing more than two layers on a single-sided disc. The patent also covers the general set-up of a VMD production line and method of playing-back multi-layer discs. Such will allow for the 'first' time the replication of multi-layer discs with production yield and costs comparable to current DVD production, claimed the company.

"NME is the first company to perfect a commercially-viable 2P process—and a cost-efficient, high-yield 2P process, or a modification of this, is crucial to the mass production of multi-layer discs," said Eugene Levich, NME CTO. "This technological imperative transcends the issue of formats and, since the current trend is a proliferation of high-definition standards, the only way to achieve compatibility between these standards is through multi-layering."

Moreover, the Netherlands-based replicator VDL ODMS has validated the VMD technology. NME has entered an agreement with the replicator to produce the mass production machinery based on standard DVD equipment augmented by VMD 2P technology. The full VMD production line will be unveiled later this year.

"Our scientists and engineers have been working to perfect the 2P process for years, while many others abandoned this process as too costly and complex," said Mahesh Jayanarayan, NME CEO. "With the validation of VMD technology by an established replicator and our strong patent portfolio in multi-layer disc technology, we are excited about our position to help provide answers and low-cost solutions to the high-definition disc debate."
