aRfic, NTU join hands on RFIC tech

Advanced RFIC (aRfic) Pte Ltd has partnered with Nanyang Technological University (NTU) to advance R&D efforts in RFIC technology. ARfic is pouring Rs.40,788 crore ($9 million) in this collaboration, which will be used to build an RFIC research laboratory and to create scholarships for NTU students.

The research laboratory, to be set up at NTU's School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, will contain a 300mm probe system that can make modelling, measurement and characterisation of nano-RF devices, ICs and systems. Moreover, 30 NTU students will be granted postgraduate scholarships, each worth Rs.90,640 ($2,000) per month for 24 months. The selected students will then work on four key projects at the new lab.

"This joint collaboration aims to further research on deep sub-micron-nanometer devices as well as develop design software that help predict device performance," said Henry Liu, aRfic Chairman. "This earmarked collaboration with NTU marks a new milestone for both NTU and aRfic in the hope of stimulating growth in R&D activity in Singapore. We are confident that this Rs.40,788 crore ($9 million) collaboration will harvest greater expertise in this high technological area and more as aRfic and NTU scale greater heights together."

Singapore is increasingly pursuing the RFIC segment to move the local industry up the value chain and to further the local industry's growth.

"The semiconductor industry remains an important economic driver for Singapore and it is crucial that we develop the talent to meet this growth," said Kam Chan Hin, chairman, NTU's School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering. "Through our research efforts, NTU has been helping to provide the critical R&D support in Singapore's push up the semiconductor value chain."
