Matsushita Electric Industrial Co. Ltd disclosed that it will build a new plasma display panel fab that will double its PDP capacity from 10 lakh to almost 20 lakh units a month by 2009.

The company expects that global demand for large-sized flat-panel TVs, including LCD TVs over 37 inches, will grow from two crore units currently to five crore units in 2009. By that time, Matsushita aims to capture a 25 per cent share of the market, said Matsushita president Fumio Ohtsubo.

PDP technology has been said to have an advantage in the realm of large TVs, with LCD TVs catching up rapidly. But PDP televisions have advantages in production efficiency and cost competitiveness over other technologies, said Matsushita.

The new fab, called the fifth PDP plant of Matsushita PDP Company Ltd., will be built near the third and fourth PDP plants in Amagasaki. With an investment of about Rs.10,604.88 crore ($2.34 billion), the new fab will have a capacity of 10 lakh units (counted in 42-inch panels). It will use a glass substrate from which ten 42-inch panels or eight 50-inch panels can be cut. The construction starts in November with production scheduled to begin in May 2009.

Matsushita was the top supplier of PDP TVs in Q3 of 2006, with a 32.8 per cent market share, according to market research firm DisplaySearch. It has been rapidly expanding its PDP production capacity, going into full production last summer with its third plant will begin operation of its fourth fab in July and will go into full production with it in 2008. When the fourth fab comes online, Matsushita's total monthly capacity will equal 925,000 units. The fifth fab in plans will add another 925,000 units to that total.
