Verbatim Corp., together with its parent company, Mitsubishi Kagaku Media (Verbatim/MKM) has started production of 2X speed 50GB dual-layer (DL) Blu-ray Recordable (BD-R) and Blu-ray Rewriteable (BD-RE) media for shipment to the United States. The 50GB capacity is equivalent to about 4hrs of HD video recording on a single disc.

The BD media has a proprietary super-hard coating developed by MKM because the BD data layer is close to the disc surface and is not protected by a plastic substrate like DVD media. The hard coat protects the BD data layer from scratches and fingerprints without warping the disc, and allows the media to be used in bare disc form, without a cartridge.

Designed for wide-power margins, the media's applications include video production, business storage, backup, archiving, radio and TV broadcast storage, education, banking, healthcare and government applications.

Moreover, Verbatim offers its 2X speed single-layer BD-R and BD-RE media with a capacity of 25GB. Verbatim's media can record over 2hrs of HDTV, which is equal to five times the recording capacity of DVD/TV video quality of a standard DVD disc.

This year, Verbatim/MKM is also preparing for the launch of its 4X BD-R single and dual media.
