Promising to bring enhanced search capabilities to embedded software developers, Hitachi's embedded business group is announcing that Entier, its relational database management system, is being ported to RTOS from Mentor Graphics Corp. and Wind River Systems.

Released late last year, Entier is a relational-database management system for embedded devices. It claims sophisticated search capabilities that are not generally available with object databases. Hitachi claims that a minimum-size relational database with SQL search capability will take as little as 300KB.

Nucleus Plus RTOS
Steven King, VP of marketing at Hitachi's embedded business group, said Hitachi has already ported Entier to Mentor Graphics' Nucleus Plus RTOS, and is in the process of porting Entier to Wind River's Linux Edition and VxWorks Edition OS. Hitachi Entier's first customer win in the U.S., a digital media server from Blue Peach, makes use of the integration with Nucleus, he said.

"What we're really interested in with Mentor Graphics and Wind River is bringing search capabilities to consumer devices," King said. "This will allow the developer to easily develop the data management portion of their applications, and it will allow consumer devices to quickly and efficiently develop search capabilities."

Incremental text search
Entier provides an incremental text search capability that progressively executes the search, narrowing down the results with each keystroke and guiding the user with a list of possible next letters in the search term. It also provides a spatial, or multi-dimensional, 3D search that can find content that is "more like this," such as music with a certain tempo.

To port Entier to an RTOS, King said, Hitachi engineers need to remap system calls and test them on the chosen RTOS. He said the Wind River port will be available in Q1 or Q2 2007. Ports to other RTOSes will be developed "on a demand basis," he said.
