VLIW DSP targets high-density GSM

A triple-core, VLIW DSP is not usually associated with mass markets for wireless infrastructure, but Texas Instruments Inc. hopes its 3GHz TCI6487 will find its first applicaTIons in high-density GSM backbones.

The intent is not necessarily to provide VLIW for the masses, said John Smrstik, marketing manager for communications infrastructure DSP. "The most traction will come from low-cost GSM, but 3GHz is significant processor performance," he said. "This will play an important role in bringing WiMAX into broader wireless infrastructure."

Like other members of the 64xx family, the TCI6487 is fully programmable, though TI opted not to support five air interface standards in one chip. Instead, handling full-duplex channels over a single air interface was the driver. In this case, 96 full-duplex GSM users per processor are supported from the base station. In a TD-SCDMA environment, the DSP supports three carriers and 72 users.

The 64nm CMOS processor offers both Serial RapidIO and Ethernet interfaces, to keep up with the most recent trends in open base station design. The chip also follows the standards of the recently formed Common Public Radio Interface (CPRI) coalition for open base stations. Because the Open Base Station Standard Initiative (Obsai) calls for support of divergent antenna interface bandwidths, the six configurable links on the processor can be configured with 2.46Gbps maximum rates for CPRI or 3.072Gbps maximum rates for Obsai.
