Interest in Rapid I/O specifications is growing in India as more designers sign up for conferences on how to implement the spec.

Based on registration totals for recent meetings, interest here may outpace that in the United States. Nearly 120 engineers registered for a recent event here compared to 55 at a similar event in Boston. Observers said the response indicates the growing level of interest here in adding Rapid I/O specifications into designs.

India "showed the highest amount of interest in the world and I notice a great level of enthusiasm in taking Rapid I/O ahead," said Tom Cox, executive director of the RapidIO Trade Association. "The questions in India mostly pertained to implementing Rapid I/O standards and this means companies here are looking at using these standards in their designs."

The Association wants to expand the specification's reach to India and Asia, Cox added.

India designers are expected to focus on writing software and applications for Rapid I/O-based systems. "We as an organisation are also now paying more attention to the software side of Rapid I/O, and there is no better time for Indian firms to join in as equal partners and drive the standards, instead of being followers," he said.

Cox estimated that the value of products implementing Rapid I/O could reach Rs.45,520 crore ($10 billion) by 2010.
