To accommodate the upcoming rapid adoption of IP PBXs and IP phones in businesses, companies must revamp their security strategies, according to In-Stat's research VoIP Security: Preparing for the evolving threat.

From 99 lakh units this year, sales of business IP phones will grow to 4.58 crore in 2010, said In-Stat. Many companies, however, are not yet prepared for the security challenges of the technology.

"To secure VoIP, businesses must move away from traditional, point solutions, and evolve towards security platforms to realise the efficiencies of converged networks," said In-Stat analyst Victoria Fodale. "Business decision-makers will need to evolve towards a unified security approach that works for converged networks and devices."

Although over 40 per cent of the respondents to In-Stat's survey have no specific plans for securing VoIP deployments, the research firm found that majority has budgets allotments to do so. When the respondents were asked to rate their knowledge of VoIP security, most answered 'somewhat knowledgeable' which is the lowest rating in the In-Stat survey.
