Seventy-eight out of 100 operators surveyed by Pyramid Research are reportedly considering to invest in WiMAX, with 62 operators planning the investment as early as 2007, and about 10 per cent suggesting an investment worth over Rs.455.20 crore ($100 million).

"WiMAX has gained significant momentum over the last year—its standardisation is complete, vendor and operator ecosystems are expanding, and the hype is getting louder, often justifiably so, as our operator survey revealed," said Ozgur Aytar, manager of Pyramid's CMT Research and author of the Can WiMAX Challenge 3G? Performance, Economics and Opportunities report.

The Pyramid Research report also stated that the operator community will eventually determine if WiMAX can challenge 3G based on their investment plans, expectations and concerns about the hyped technology.

Aytar said, "While much of the discussion around mobile WiMAX is largely speculative today, its promise is compelling and has drawn operators' attention. 3G platforms will likely remain dominant in mature markets. However, our analysis of OPEX and CAPEX shows that mobile WiMAX can make significant inroads in high-growth developing countries if it can live up to its promise, particularly on the economics front."
