Designed to deliver cost-effective RAID data protection for desktops, workstations and entry-level servers, Adaptec Inc. has launched a family of entry-level serial ATA controllers consisting of the Adaptec serial ATA 1220SA and 1430SA HostRAID devices that support Intel Corp.'s latest PCIe interconnect.

The Adaptec serial ATA 1220SA and 1430SA are HostRAID controllers (HostRAID is a software RAID technology that maximises system performance and uptime for Adaptec software RAID products) that allow users to group disc drives together, which delivers improved data protection and increased performance when compared to just one drive.

The low-profile form factor of Adaptec 1220SA and 1430SA make them suitable for entry-level servers and workstations requiring data protection and basic RAID features with support for up to two (Adaptec 1220SA) or four (Adaptec 1430SA) serial ATA drives.

PCIe support
"An enhancement to the Adaptec serial ATA 1220SA and 1430SA as compared to the company's other serial ATA controllers is support for the new Intel PCIe bus. These cards offer the same data protection, reliability and performance as Adaptec's full line of PCI/PCI-X entry-level serial ATA controllers but now include support for the PCIe bus," said Tim Connolly, VP of marketing for the data protection solutions group at Adaptec. "Also, unique to Adaptec's controllers is that the HostRAID is integrated, a software based RAID code that offers a more cost-effective, low-profile form factor with optimised performance for entry-level systems."

With the latest additions, Adaptec claims to be the first company with multiport PCIe offerings. In general, Adaptec serial ATA storage products combine high capacity with performance that is much faster than tape—all for a much lower cost-per-gigabyte than primary storage. Optimised for capacity, serial ATA is suitable for disc-to-disc backup and nearline storage of fixed reference data that must be kept readily accessible. Adaptec serial ATA storage is also a cost-effective staging area for moving primary storage to archival tape.

Key features of the Adaptec 1220SA and 1430SA include Adaptec HostRAID, an integrated RAID software technology that cost-effectively provides RAID levels 0, 1 and 10 for protection against data loss or corruption.

Customers using the serial ATA HostRAID controllers from Adaptec for PCIe can take advantage of improved data throughput and higher bandwidth to maximise system performance for applications such as A/Vstreaming and gaming.

Improved performance
The Adaptec 1220SA improves performance over comparable serial ATA RAID controllers by offering two 3Gbps serial ATA ports, NCQ support and a PCIe x1 host interface with bandwidth up to 500MBps. And, the Adaptec 1430SA improves performance over a comparable serial ATA RAID controller by offering four 3Gbps serial ATA ports, NCQ support and a PCIe x4 MHz host interface with bandwidth up to 2.5Gbps, which is four times as fast as a common 64bit PCI interface, according to Connolly.

Both products are suitable for desktop and workstations as well as entry-level servers requiring RAID mirroring or striping, as well as small office and home office use as a boot device for print, file and storage servers. Because of their performance features, the controllers can also be used for video editing, A/V streaming and gaming applications.

The intuitive Adaptec Storage Manager (ASM) tool centralizes management of all Adaptec RAID products and enables remote RAID management, monitoring and configuration through secure, encrypted communication.

The Adaptec serial ATA 1220SA and 1430SA are currently shipping and available through distribution partners and resellers. Pricing is Rs.3,414 ($75) for the 1220SA and Rs.5,690 ($125) for the 1430SA.
