MLCC capacitor decreases board flex cracking

Kemet has released an MLCC capacitor that uses a soft termination to help decrease the chance of board flex cracking and capacitor failure due to an electrical short.

Kemet said MLCC cracking due to board assembly and handling has been an industry-wide issue for some time. These capacitors with a soft termination add pliability to the end termination, shifting any flex crack that may occur in the termination area and away from active layers.

Kemet has several other products under development that are also designed to reduce the risk of cracking due to board flex. These include the clip-on lead frame MLCCs and extended termination MLCCs.

In addition to the soft termination, clip-on lead frame and extended termination MLCCs, other Kemet capacitors that address flex-cracking issues include open mode MLCCs, floating electrode MLCCs, SMD tantalum capacitors, as well as leaded tantalum and MLCCs.

The soft termination MLCC capacitors will be available Q1 2007. Samples are available today.
